Don’t leave for New York without your arrival-cheat-sheet! It contains helpful information about navigating the airport, getting to your housing assignment, and NYU New York contact information. Please provide a copy of this document to your family.
Here are some other things to keep in mind:
- Know the time difference between your hometown and New York, and discuss a communication plan with your friends and family
- Know what to expect for meal costs in your host location. See the NYU New York Study Away website for the cost of a few items and be sure to access the pre-departure budgeting module.
- Check the exchange rate for your host country’s currency regularly
- Purchase any necessary voltage convertors and/or adaptors.
And remember these tips from our First Time Traveler Post. (They’re actually quite good for everyone!)
Because we understand that most of you will arrival to New York and immediately start spring classes, we want to make sure you have some baseline information to better prepare you for your first week in New York. In order to do so, we ask you to complete five modules prior to your arrival in New York.
The modules will cover Health and Wellness, Exploring NYU, Academics, Money & Banking, and Exploring New York City. You will receive an email from the Student Health Center about your Health and Wellness module. The remaining four modules will be available through NYU Classes. Starting next week you will receive one email for each module over the course of remainder of the fall semester with directions on accessing the material. Each module will take 5-10 minutes to complete and you can do so at your own pace and at a time that is best for you. At the end of each module be sure to click the “Exit” button in order to record your participation.
If you already completed these modules as a fall 2016 study away student in New York, you may want to review these modules, particularly the module on Academics as calendar information changes each semester.
At orientation we will be revisiting the content of the modules. All students who complete all five modules will be entered into a raffle for a special prize.
The Office of Housing has confirmed that students should plan to check out of housing May 17 rather than May 18. If you have already purchased your tickets to depart on May 18, please complete the Spring Flight Form by December 12 and we can arrange for a late check out for May 18. Please note the blog has been updated to reflect the May 17 preferred check-out date.
Once you’ve purchased your flight, remember to complete this form by January 4 . This is critical so local staff are aware of when you intend to arrive. The earlier you can submit these the better so staff can get a sense of common arrival times.
In addition, please also submit these into NYU Traveler, which goes directly to NYU Public Safety. It should only take you a few minutes and you can get started by taking the following steps:
If you have questions about filling out this form, please refer to this step-by-step guide or the tutorial video. Should any technical problems present themselves while entering your information into NYU Traveler, you may contact firstname.lastname@example.org for assistance.
For new, incoming spring students, please note that the housing application deadline has been extended to Monday, November 28 at 12PM (EST). Please be sure to complete your application, including the deferment request (to remove the $1000 reservation payment requirement) by this new deadline to assure you will be assigned housing. Remember to send any questions about housing to email@example.com.
